The industrialists will make presentations with an aim to suggest ways to achieve Mr Modi’s policy vision — New India 2022.4 per cent. He seems to forget that most of our major companies have business models based on obtaining government assets at low prices and selling the products and services at market prices.Considering that the entire industrial sector only contributes about 20 per cent of the GDP, it is quite obvious that many, if not most, of the commanding heights of the economy are still with the public sector. He has heard enough of the gripes of the private sector captains. As they say, money is the mother’s milk of politicsTrue to his word, Mr Modi dismantled all these councils and committees and everything is now concentrated with him.

The private sector by contrast does well and the challenge for the government is to make the public sector do as well.4 per cent of all PSU profits, the coal sector 20.Clearly, the overall picture is not a rosy one, for our PSUs depend on administered prices and are mostly oligarchies in many major sectors such as coal, hydrocarbons and minerals. There is no sign of this any of these happening. In 2015, the 41 PSUs in these three sectors together provided Rs 100,369 crore or about two-thirds of PSU profits. These councils rarely met.5 per cent and the power sector 14. The state oil companies contributed 30.By all accounts Narendra Modi is a pretty isolated figure. The one on nutrition, for instance, met only once in the UPA’s 10 years. But solutions are possible that will enable the public sector to become a profitable, productive and contributing sector of our economy. Dr Manmohan Singh had a surfeit of advice with it flowing from as many as eight sector specific councils of which he himself headed as many as six, including one each on skill development, industry, nutrition, wildlife and unique identification. The 320 CPSUs contributed by way of excise duty, customs duty, corporate tax, interest on Central government loans, dividend and other duties and taxes Rs 278,075 crore, which increased from Rs 2,00,593 crore in 2014-15, showing a growth of 38. PSU holdings are being offloaded to plug revenue gaps without any plan to make PSUs profitable and contribute to the States coffers.Yet, in the three years he has been in office, Mr Modi has shown a singular lack of interest in the public sector where our economic and industrial malaise is concentrated.

The discussions are likely to revolve around "Make in India", overhaul of the financial services, healthcare, retail and Digital India. Few know who he meets and whose advice he solicits.34 lakh people (excluding contractual workers) in 2015-16. This is a sorry state of affairs. They also employed 12. Apart from these, Dr Singh had 35 ministerial committees — empowered groups of ministers (EGoMs) and groups of ministers (GoMs) — to whom he tossed decisions, more often not to be taken. However, his list of expected invitees betrays his myopia. The only council that met regularly was the Council on Trade and Industry, which featured all the major captains of business. But one group he meets from time to time, even if not to solicit advice but to preach, are industrialists. If you keep these three sectors aside, the rest of the PSUs together earned a pittance.Thirty-five years ago in 1980-81 the capital invested in Central PSUs was Rs 18, 207 crore and they had a combined turnover of Rs 28,635 crore.Quite clearly we are unable to extract any benefits from the huge investments made in these companies. This does not always entail privatisation. Mr Modi should now be talking to PSU bosses to understand their problems and seek ideas and advice from them on how to jumpstart the moribund PSUs so that they can contribute to growth in a meaningful way. The PM should focus his attention of improving their performance instead of being attentive to only the needs of the private sector, which for the most part are well managed and are profitable. He also misses the fact that most of industrial investment in India is by the State, and unless these become productive and profitable, India’s industrial sector will languish. Since he took over he has had two well-publicised gatherings of all the fat cats, even the NPA overburdened ones, and one more is now planned for soon.. Unlike the previous Prime Minister, who created many councils of advisers and gave many of the country’s gainfully under-employed titles and platforms to be seen on and not necessarily heard, Narendra Modi has given away little except to a few cronies from his Gujarat days. He said he had plans to sell off the traditional laggards and to fix the ones with potential. In 2016, Capital Employed (Paid up capital plus reserve and surplus and long-term loans) in all CPSUs stood at Rs 19,68,311 crore on March 31, 2016.

All this is possible, but only if Mr Modi focuses his attention on reforming and restructuring our PSUs and on realising returns on the huge investments the nation has made on them. He obviously believes that the private corporations are the ones who will lead India’s economic growth and provide it with the entrepreneurship and vision required to make our dreams come true.63 per cent. India has made huge investments in the public sector and has never got even halfway to a fair return on them.Soon after he assumed office, Mr Modi indicated plans to do more with state-controlled companies than use them as piggy banks to break into whenever the government needed a revenue boost. Then by a process that selectively uses liquidation, outright sale, restructuring and amalgamations, new, viable and profitable connectors factory entities could be created whose ownership could then be progressively diluted to broad base it and liberate these companies from bureaucratic and ministerial control.

The critical first step would be to take all the PSUs from out of their administrative ministries and bring them under one administrative ministry whose mandate would be to make the PSUs cumulatively profitable. He also signalled the government had plans to privatise state-run firms and unfetter them from the clutches of the middle bureaucracy of deputy and joint secretaries.

6 West Texas Intermediate oil prices are depressed relative to Middle East benchmark Dubai because of rising US shale oil production and as the OPEC cuts have reduced the amount of Middle East medium, sour crude.Earlier this month Indian Oil Corp, China RCA plug factory the nations top refiner, bought 1.2 million barrels per day above a year ago, the International Energy Agency said on Thursday in its latest monthly report.Ramachandran said the landed price of the American oil cargo would be "reasonably competitive" to the delivered price of the high sulphur oil from the Middle East."We are also looking at buying low sulphur oil from America if priced competitively.BPCL is the second Indian refiner to buy US Gulf crude after Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Washington last month when President Donald Trump said the United States looked forward to exporting more energy products to the worlds third-biggest oil buyer.India is the latest Asian country to buy US crude after South Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Australia and Taiwan after the OPEC cuts drove up prices of Middle East heavy-sour crude, or grades with a high sulphur content.

Refiners in India, the worlds third biggest oil consumer, are diversifying crude imports as cheaper alternatives have emerged due to a global supply glut despite OPEC and some non-OPEC producers cutting output to jack up prices.Global oil output in June is 1.Share of Middle Eastern crude in Indias imports shrank in June to the smallest since October 2015, while that from south America, Africa and Central Asia including Russia rose. Our refineries need both low sulphur and high sulphur oil," he said, adding the latest purchase was a trial cargo.BPCL aims to operate its Kochi refinery in Southern India at expanded capacity of 310,000 barrels per day (bpd) from September, he added..Current market dynamics are also helping Indias plan to deepen energy ties with the United States.

The couple’s VVS Foundation, which supports the education of underprivileged kids, has been around for the past two years, albeit with a very low profile. "I’m happy with whoever we got during the auction. Over the last two years, our spinners weren’t doing too well. He is an mpact player.S. In a chat with Laxman and his wife Sailaja, the former cricketer opens up about their Foundation, his quest to give back to society, the Sunrisers Hyderabad and of course, family. Laxman’s home in Hyderabad, you are greeted with several trophies that he won during his elaborate and successful career as a cricketer."Sailaja, who is personally involved with the Foundation, says, "We have a quarterly audit, where we directly get in touch with the parents and the students. "The Foundation supports 90 children apart from 4 IIT students, and we want to raise that number.

These new recruits will give us flexibility in playing different combinations in the matches," says Laxman. We got a spinner in Rashid, spinning all-rounder in Mohammad Nabi, and a fast bowler in Chris Jordan. We also support three schools in Hyderabad and one in Bengaluru. After my retirement, I became an ambassador for a couple of NGOs and also happened to visit various charity run schools.V."V.S.Sailaja admits that Laxman has got "even busier after his retirement".As you enter V."Laxman reveals, "We also want to set up a sports school, which will focus on both sports and academics while giving an all round development to 3.5 mm to quarter inch students. He makes sure that he makes enough time for family," says Sailaja. I’m taking help from Azim Premji’s Foundation because they have already invested a lot of money, time and knowledge in helping people from similar background."He continues, "Our scholarship in education is known as the Sathyaram scholarship — named after my parents, Satyabhama and Shantaram while our sports scholarship is named Baba Krishnamohan scholarship, after my maternal uncle, who spotted my talent and mentored me.V. He is very confident and can bat well too. Rashid is a wicket taking bowler. In between, we meet students and check their academic progress as well," says Sailaja. "My kids were named by Sathya Sai Baba," says Sailaja adding, "We want the kids that we support to enjoy the same kind of facilities like our kids, Sarvajit and Achintya. We want them to be confident and ready to face challenges, without compromising on academics. "I have learnt so much during my career as a cricketer, I wanted to share the knowledge," he says.

But the selection process is very stringent, as we want to give an opportunity to only those who deserve it," says Sailaja, while Laxman adds, "Sailaja was always very philanthropic in nature, supporting underprivileged kids. That’s when I planned to start a foundation and we thought of doing this in a structured and systematic manner. adds, "We also counsel the parents and children to motivate and inspire them. My kids should also understand that they are equal to other children."     "We organise various health camps. But Laxman says that this is his way of giving back to the society.S."On donning many hatsPost-retirement, Laxman has taken on various roles — he is a cricket commentator, on the advisory committee of the BCCI, a mentor to SRH, batting consultant to Bengal’s senior team and a columnist, apart from running a cricket academy and school, with his wife. We arrange meetings with their role models and take them on field trips. But even then, he played for a while with Sarvajit before he left to school.A Family ManIn spite of having a lot of work commitments, Laxman makes sure that he has enough time for his family."

On Sunrisers HyderabadA mentor to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Laxman says that they tried to plug a few loopholes this time around.Talking about Rashid, the star cricketer in this season, Laxman says, "Picking Rashid was a collective decision of Tom (Moody), Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) and myself.V."The other day he landed late at night, and came home by early morning. Laxman and his wife SailajaSailaja admits that Sathya Sai Baba was a great motivation.
